Getting a tattoo is more than just a moment of art; it’s a commitment to care for your skin. Proper aftercare ensures your new masterpiece heals beautifully, stays vibrant, and remains a source of pride for years to come. Here’s how to take care of your fresh ink.

The First 24 Hours: Protect and Observe

Immediately after your tattoo session, your artist will cover your new ink with a protective bandage, such as Saniderm or Tatu-Derm. It’s crucial to keep this bandage on for the specified duration—generally 2–5 hours—so that your tattoo can start healing properly. If bleeding occurs, consult your artist about changing the bandage sooner. Remember, if the bandage becomes excessively soaked, use fresh gauze to cover it gently while minimizing irritation to the tattoo.

Gently Clean Your Tattoo

Once the initial bandage is removed, it’s time to clean your tattoo. Use cold water and a mild antibacterial soap, avoiding washcloths or scrubbing tools. Your fingers are the best cleaning tool for this step. Gently pat your tattoo dry and, if you still see any bleeding, contact your artist for advice. Allowing your skin to breathe is vital at this stage.

Apply Quality Aftercare Products

Choosing the right aftercare products is essential for a smooth healing process. Avoid petroleum-based products or alcohol, which can dry out your skin. Instead, opt for specialized tattoo aftercare balms like Tattoo Goo or Recovery Tattoo Salve. Apply a thin layer multiple times daily for optimal hydration and healing. If you have sensitive skin, consider using a tattoo lotion right from the start.

Be Mindful for the Next Few Weeks

The weeks following your tattoo are crucial. Keep your skin clean and moist while resisting the urge to scratch or pick at any peeling or itchy areas. Wear loose clothing to avoid friction, steer clear of excessive sun exposure, and avoid submerging your tattoo in water. Continue applying tattoo lotion for well over a month to lock in color and maintain vibrancy.
